Measuring delicate parts with virtually zero force
The measurement of delicate parts, such as those in the watchmaking industry, must not lead to their deformation, otherwise the results could be incorrect or the parts could become damaged. The HEIDENHAIN-METRO MT 1281MW length gauge is particularly suited for such demanding measuring tasks. For measurements with a gauging force of nearly 0 (0.01 N to 0.07 N), it includes a specially paired insert with an exchangeable measuring pin. These extremely low values over a measuring range of 12 mm are also possible thanks to the ball-bush guide with very constant friction conditions and the constantly improving measuring force over the course of five million measuring cycles.
The included plunger lifter gives the operator the most direct control possible over the measuring process. As an alternative, a mechanical cable lifter can achieve a very constant gauging motion. The gauging speed is set with a throttle screw in the bellows. The interaction between the guideway, the ZERODUR scale with 2 µm signal period, and the electronics in the connector makes repeatability better than 0.03 µm possible.
The ND 287 evaluation unit is suitable as a subsequent electronics unit for stand-alone measuring stations. When combined with an MT 1281, a measuring step of 1 nm is possible. Also, it offers a color display and many possibilities for capturing and classifying measurement series as well as creating histograms. The ND 287 thus makes it easier to evaluate the manufacturing process.

Highest accuracy and repeatability between temperatures of 19 °C and 21 °C with a thermally invariable design
With an accuracy of 0.1 µm and a repeatability of 0.03 µm, the HEIDENHAIN-CERTO length gauge gives you the most exact measurement over a range of 60 mm that the market has to offer. The calibration chart indicates a value for linear error compensation. In combination with an ND 287 evaluation unit, the achievable accuracy improves to +/-0.05 µm.
Using the recommended CS 200 gauge stand even results in a thermally invariable measuring loop. Since the gauge stand and the HEIDENHAIN-CERTO mechanism both consist of Invar (expansion 1 ppm/K) and the scale with 2 µm signal period is manufactured from ZERODUR (expansion 0.1 ppm/K), small variations in temperature, which generally cannot be avoided, do not affect the accuracy. For high-accuracy measurements, such as stations where the finished dimensions are checked, the optional analog module can be used to compensate for deviations in the temperature of the workpiece or the entire system from the standard 20 °C.
The results of tactile measurements in this accuracy range can already be influenced by an unevenness when zeroing the length gauge. For this reason the CS 200 gauge stand fulfills special requirements regarding a flatness of 0.6 µm for the surface relevant to the measurement. For even greater requirements regarding the flatness, the ceramic plate with vacuum suction can be used. This accessory is specified for a flatness of 0.1 µm.
The electrical motor offers three gauging forces and a very constant probing force over the entire measuring range. The heat input by the operator is reduced to a minimum.

In highly dynamic measuring tasks, such as on test stands, counting errors can occur in the subsequent electronics when using incremental encoders. These are often caused by excessive speeds or vibrations. The absolute length gauges of the HEIDENHAIN-ACANTO series avoid these counting errors by continuously determining the absolute position value for each request, without needing a reference run.
The diagnostics continually check the current state of the encoder and report it via the respective valuation numbers. Should there be an error in the formation of the position value, an alarm bit is transmitted via the interface. A simple check of the state of the length gauge is then possible together with the diagnostic interface of the EnDat 2.2 protocol. This alarm and diagnostic function in particular is important for securing the process capability of the system in advance. In addition, HEIDENHAIN-ACANTO length gauges feature a sliding guide system with ceramic bushing—the best solution for fulfilling the contrary demands of sturdiness and repeatability. A ball-bush guide gives better repeatability, but is more sensitive to contamination and less sturdy than a sliding guide with ceramic bushing.
In combination with the EIB 741 evaluation unit, a position value can be requested every 100 µs. Per channel the EIB 741 can typically store 250,000 data records as well as transmit approx. 1.2 MB of data in streaming mode over the Ethernet interface. The provided C++ and LabView drivers simplify integration in the machine system. As an alternative, as evaluation units you can use the ND 2100G GAGE-CHEK for up to eight encoders, or the MSE 1000 for up to 250 encoders.

Industry 4.0, among other factors, concerns gaining more information about the quality of each individual machining step and each quality inspection step. HEIDENHAIN ACANTO length gauges provide realistically analyzable information about the measurements. This is made possible with the bidirectional EnDat 2.2 interface. In addition to providing the position value, the interface also provides further information about the length gauge:
- Valuation numbers supply data about the momentary status of the encoder. These therefore enable continuous monitoring of the functional quality of scanning.
- Warnings and alarms enable conclusions concerning components affected by equipment failure, for example the light unit or signal amplitude.The electronic ID plate immediay displays all technical encoder parameters upon device switch-on.
The subsequent electronics can independently configure the signal period or measuring step with the transmitted information. The EnDat 2.2. interface also enables the retransfer of information to the length gauge.
Two company departments directly benefit from this added value:
- Quality Assurance can determine the quality of measurements with this diagnostics information.
- Machine Maintenance is able to avoid unnecessary idle times during production thanks to the valuation numbers.
The valuation numbers are dynamically created in a way similar to the maintenance intervals of modern cars according to their running conditions. Length gauges from the HEIDENHAIN SPECTO series feature station widths of less than 15 mm, enabling several length gauges to be positioned in tight spaces. To keep space requirements in the system low, cables can be either axially or radially connected. The length gauge is also ideal for in-process measurements thanks to a protection class to IP67.
Accuracy of ±1 µm is ensured over measuring strokes of 12 mm (with the ST 1200) or 30 mm (with the ST 3000). The short-range accuracy (measurement error in a measuring range of 200 µm) is typically less than 0.3 µm, and repeatability has the same low value. These values are possible among other factors due to the highly precise ball guide, designed for a life of more than 60 million measuring cycles.
